Mykonos Windmills
As we can see from an old map of the 15th century, people in Myconos early realized that they could use wind's power to produce mechanical energy.
During 19th century 28 windmills were working in the island. Bakery was very important for the economy of the island and many ships were approaching Mykonos for food provisions.
Windmills shape is cylindrical, are made of stone and they have three floors.
The roof was able to turn, finding the best angle with wind's direction.
The roof has conical shape and it is covered with rushes.
The grinding mechanism was on the top floor. The flour from the millstones was falling to the second floor. Ready products were weighting on the ground floor. This floor was also used as a storage area. The only windmill you can visit today inside is Bonis Windmill which is the best preserved Mykonos windmill.
